1. Statement of Intent
Khalsa Panth Academy is committed to ensuring, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of all students, staff, volunteers, and visitors involved in our activities. We aim to provide a safe and healthy environment for the delivery of all educational, cultural, and physical programmes under the Academy’s name.
The Academy acknowledges its responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and other relevant health and safety legislation. We will maintain proactive health and safety management and seek continuous improvement in our practices.
2. Responsibilities
The Management Team Will:
- Ensure suitable arrangements are in place for managing health and safety across all Academy activities
- Undertake regular risk assessments and implement necessary control measures
- Provide appropriate resources, supervision, and training
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements and guidance
- Appoint competent persons to oversee safety procedures
Staff and Volunteers Will:
- Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others
- Co-operate with all health and safety instructions and procedures
- Report any hazards, incidents, or concerns promptly
- Undertake required health and safety and safeguarding training
Students and Visitors Are Expected To:
- Follow health and safety instructions and behave responsibly
- Inform staff of any injuries, concerns, or unsafe behaviour
- Treat others and the Academy premises with respect
3. Risk Assessment and Safety Measures
- Comprehensive risk assessments are carried out for all Academy venues and activities, including classes, workshops, events, trips, and performances
- Control measures are reviewed and updated regularly
- Safety instructions are provided to participants and reviewed termly or upon significant change
4. Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
- Fire exits are clearly marked and kept free of obstruction
- Evacuation procedures are displayed and explained at the start of each term or session
- Fire drills are carried out and recorded periodically
- Staff are trained in emergency response and first aid procedures
5. First Aid
- Appropriate first aid provision is available at all Academy venues
- A list of trained first aiders is maintained and displayed
- All incidents requiring first aid are recorded in the accident log
- Emergency contact details for all students are securely held and kept up to date
6. Equipment and Facilities
- All equipment (e.g. musical instruments, sports gear, and teaching materials) is regularly inspected and maintained
- Defective or damaged items are removed from use and reported for repair or disposal
- Teaching and practice areas are kept clean, well-lit, and free from unnecessary hazards
7. Accident and Incident Reporting
- All accidents, near-misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported to the designated health and safety lead
- An incident form must be completed and retained securely
- Serious incidents will be reviewed by management and followed up with appropriate action
8. Health and Hygiene
- Cleanliness of all learning spaces and communal areas is a priority
- Participants are encouraged to practise good personal hygiene
- Handwashing and sanitation facilities are made available
- Any contagious illness or outbreak will be managed according to public health advice
9. Safeguarding and Wellbeing
- Health and safety procedures are aligned with the Academy’s Safeguarding Policy
- Emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing are considered in the planning and delivery of all activities
- Any concern affecting the welfare of a student must be reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) without delay
10. Training and Communication
- All new staff and volunteers receive a health and safety induction
- Ongoing refresher training is provided where relevant
- Updates to policy or procedure are communicated promptly
- Staff meetings routinely include health and safety agenda items
11. Monitoring and Review
This policy is reviewed annually or in response to a major incident or change in legislation. Feedback from staff, parents, and students is welcomed as part of our commitment to continuous improvement.
